Lindsey Appolis sees the everyday beauty that is often clouded by perceptions and preconceived notions and camera in hand he is exposing the splendour around him; particularly of the Cape Flats.
According to Appolis his photographic style is cinematic and he will be giving viewers a glimpse into his memories and how he looks at things.
Lindsey Appolis grew up in the Cape Flats and is resolute to show his community in a new light.
With his eye for sensory experiences, Appolis has photographed everything from dancers soaring in the air, to the deserted streets of Cape Town mornings.
“The minute I’m shooting something, I just feel so alive, I put the camera on and my brain switches on.”
Lindsey Appolis’ creativity is sparked by his hometown and his distinct memories of Cape Flats childhood.
Challenging beliefs that the area is impoverished and violent, Appolis captures the innate joy and goodness in each neighbourhood.
He says when he photographs the space he grew up in or the people he knows, it is not to depict a picture of what poor looks like rather it is to show that the people there are beautiful.
“If I can do anything it’s to bring kids up from there and say, ‘You actually can do this.'”
