Two police officers were injured after their police van overtook a car, slammed into a BMW and flipped and landed on its roof in Kraaifontein.

According to a witness, at 6.30pm on Friday, the silver BMW was turning onto Raan Street from Old Paarl Road when the cop car overtook a car in front of it and slammed head-on into the BMW.

The front of the BMW on the driver’s side was smashed in, but the driver was uninjured.

Paramedics were called and both officers were treated on the scene, they were subsequently transported to hospital for further treatment.

According to eye-witnesses, one of the officers, a female cop, was holding her shoulder in terrible pain.

A 28-year-old man from Kraaifontein who witnessed the incident said the police officers were reckless and the cause of the accident.

“The driver of the car was taking a turn into Raan Street and the police van overtook another car,” he said.

“I don’t think they saw the BMW and it was too late to go back. Their emergency lights were not even on, so I don’t know why they were in such a hurry, but at least nobody died because of their driving.”

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirmed the crash. “An accident was reported in Kraaifontein and the circumstances are being investigated, with no arrests so far.”
