Firefighters ambushed in fake fire call out

Two firefighters who responded to a report of a fire in Wallacedene, Cape Town on Saturday morning (October 17) were ambushed and assaulted.

Cape Town MAYCO member for Safety and Security, JP Smith confirmed the incident.

He said the two firefighters had to receive treatment at a hospital after being assaulted in Wallacedene.

The members of the team from Brackenfell fire station responded to a call about a fire, and on arrival, two of them made their way between the structures to investigate the source of smoke in the area.

“They were accosted by three men who threatened them at gunpoint and robbed them of their belongings, before assaulting them,” said Smith.

It emerged that there was no fire and it was all a trap.

Smith has condemned the attack: “…every incident of this nature chips away at the trust between the fire service and the communities they serve,” he said.
