Truck torched as Hout Bay protests turn violent

The protest was triggered by a high court order that was granted to demolish houses in Hangberg.

A truck has been set alight in a protest in Hout Bay on Tuesday morning after protests over housing in the area which stared on Monday turned violent.

The Hout Bay protests have seen building equipment at a construction site has also been vandalised. The City of Cape Town said an electrical facility is to be built at the location where the demonstration broke out.

The protest was triggered by a high court order that was granted to demolish houses in Hangberg.

Hout Bay Police released the following statement regarding the protests:

On Monday, 16 September 2019 at about 19:00 a public meeting was conducted in Hangberg regarding housing issues and a high court order that was granted to demolish houses in Hangberg. Community leaders had a meeting with Mayor Dan Plato last week and were informed that a court order was granted.

This information unsettled the community and planned a peaceful protest for today. After the meeting a group of 40-50 people started gathering at the corner of Harbour Road and Atlantic Skipper Road. The road was barricaded with building material, rocks and other objects to prevent any vehicles from entering the harbour.

The Power Depot site of the City of Cape Town became a target area and a truck was set alight. Protesters then looted the building site. Cape Town POPS arrived and acted on the protesters. A Public Violence case was opened. A group of protesters then went up into the Hangberg and shot flairs at SAPS.

On Tuesday, 17 September 2019 a group of 50 people blocked the entrance to Hangberg and barricaded the road again with planks and other material. The area is being monitored by POPS. No arrests have been made. No injuries were reported.
