A train carriage was set ablaze at Retreat railway station in Cape Town last night.

According to TimesLIVE, Cape Town fire and rescue service spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said they were called to the scene at Retreat railway station at about 9.50pm.

The fire was extinguished after midnight and no injuries were reported.

In November, Cape Town station was temporarily shut down completely after fires destroyed 18 carriages, two teens were arrested following a review of CCTV footage and are currently being prosecuted.

Train arson is a major cause of concern in Cape Town and since 2015, more than 200 train carriages have been torched, crippling Cape Town’s rail service.

The arson incidents have also affected the thousands of commuters who rely on the train services for their daily commute.
