Tokai Forest: Users verbally abused, confronted by individual who continues to sleep in fynbos

Parkscape has issued a safety alert following reports that visitors have been verbally abused and aggressively confronted by an individual who continues to sleep in the fynbos in Tokai Forest.

In a Facebook post earlier today Parkscape indicated that they received a second report this morning, following an incident near the lookout deck.

It appears that the issue has been repeatedly reported to SANParks however no action has been taken against the individual.

“We have been attempting to address this situation together with SANParks – Table Mountain National Park for several months. Following on our own efforts to find this person assistance and alternate accommodation, we are also aware that rangers have spoken to the person concerned. However, he continues to ignore humane efforts to discourage him and continues to sleep in the fynbos,” Parkscape said.

Adding that several reports from users and local residents, in addition to this morning’s report, indicate a safety risk.

“Since the private security providers have no jurisdiction on SANParks’ land, and since, to date, SANParks has been unable to deal effectively with the situation, and given neither Parkscape nor our neighbourhood watch partners have the required jurisdiction, all we are able to do, again, is to request that users, in the interests of their own safety, do not walk alone and do not walk at off peak hours.”

Parkscape has also appealed to Law Enforcement for their assistance.
