Three constables are expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrate’s court this morning on charges of armed robbery, defeating the ends of justice and kidnapping.
The three officers attached to the Major Offences Reaction Team were arrested last Thursday when they reported for duty.
Police spokesperson, Andre Traut, says an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Unit found that the officers were on duty in Somerset West in July when they allegedly pulled over the driver of a minibus taxi.
Traut says the driver of the taxi was found to be transporting poached abalone form Hermanus to Cape Town. The trio then allegedly “kidnapped” the driver of the taxi and took the abalone. Neither the driver nor the illegal abalone was reported by any of the constables.
The officers later dropped the taxi driver off at an undisclosed location. He then reported the matter to the police.
Traut says it is unclear what happened to the abalone.
