There could be more lion cubs illegally trafficked to Cape Town


Following the rescue of a lion cub from a house in Athlone Cape Town on Thursday by the Police stock theft unit, it has now emerged that more cases of lion cub trafficking in Cape Town are under investigation.

CapeNature, a nature conservation, revealed to TimesLive that Criminal trade in lion cubs is rife in Cape Town and multiple cases of lion cub trafficking are currently under investigation.

CapeNature spokesperson Loren Pavitt said the organisation was investigating “multiple criminal cases regarding the suspected illegal import, transport, trade and possession of lion cubs in the greater Cape Town area”.

“Any lions found during the course of the investigation will be managed in accordance with our provincial protocol, which is based on international best practice,” she said.

Three people, aged 28 to 30, were taken in for questioning regarding the cub rescued from Athlone and the investigation is ongoing.
