The presidency has confirmed that President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation on developments in response to the COVID-19 pandemic tonight.

“The address follows a meeting of the National Coronavirus Command Council on Monday, 14 September 2020; a meeting of the President’s Coordinating Council on Tuesday, 15 September 2020; and a special sitting of Cabinet today, Wednesday, 16 September 2020,” said a statement issued by the presidency.
The President’s address will be broadcast and streamed on a range of platforms that are accessible to South Africans and international audiences.
Level 1 lockdown
There is widespread anticipation that President Cyricl Ramaphosa will announce the country’s move to level 1 lockdown when he addresses the nation tonight.
Level 1 lockdown may see restrictions on the following economic sectors being lifted:
- International passenger air travel for leisure purposes;
- Passenger ships for international leisure purposes;
- Attendance of any sporting event by spectators;
- International sports events;
- Night clubs;
- Reopening of borders
Moreover, according to Business Tech, during a virtual forum with the SA National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) President Ramaphosa said one of the requests he received was from religious leaders, specifically around extending the number of people who may attend gatherings.
