The fire that broke out in Noordhoek wetlands area yesterday morning is believed to have been started deliberately by suspected arsonists, Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) has revealed.

TMNP fire manager Philip Prins says a man has already been arrested by the City of of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services.

“That fire was started deliberately. While they were busy fighting that fire, they could see people walking in the area and starting new fires. At the end of the day there was about seven or eight fires,” Prins said.

According to Prins, this is not the first time that a fire has been deliberately started in the Noordhoek wetlands area.

The fire flared up on Monday afternoon and over 150 firefighters were on the scene battling the fire.
