The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), has released a statement calling for the removal of Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams from cabinet for violating lockdown regulations.
The EFF has said: “To lose a month’s worth of salary and be put on leave is a slap on the wrist for a contravention that mocks our collective efforts as a nation.”
Minister Ndabeni came under fire after an image of her having lunch with former deputy higher education minister, Mduduzi Manana during the ongoing nationwide lockdown was shared on social media.
“For one to have lunch with with friends while our people observe the lockdown is insulting and undermining,” read part of the statement.
The EFF went on to say that the attitude that ministers are beyond reproach is common under President Ramaphosa’s regime.
“We have seen it with Pravin Gordhan and we see it now with a minister Ndabeni-Abrahams who has fundamentally undermined efforts to combat a global pandemic,” said the EFF.
The EFF further called on Police Minister, Bheki Cele to take the same action they have done with ordinary citizens who violated lockdown regulations against the minister.
