WATCH: Western Cape government pushes for the lifting of the alcohol ban in the province

The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) has called  for the alcohol ban to be reinstated under level 3 of the lockdown.

In a statement the ANCWL said it does not support the decision to lift the ban on alcohol sales.

“The ANCWL rejects the unbanning of the sale of alcohol, whilst the country is still under the national state of disaster. Alcohol is one of the major contributors to gender based violence in South Africa, this situation is exacerbated because the alcohol must be consumed at home.”

The league said the decision to lift the ban on alcohol sales is effectively “a death sentence for women and children who share households with abusive drunkards.”

The ANCWL said the country needs to include alcohol rehabilitation programs as part of the ways to fight the spread of Covid-19 rather than opening alcohol sales.

“We cannot place the economy above the women and children of our Country who are victims of alcohol consumption,” the league said.
