The 21-day national lockdown has officially commenced today, however it has started on a bad note with a number of citizens in the Western Cape and other provinces being arrested for breaking the lockdown rules.
The lockdown is aimed at reducing the impact of the virus and flatten the curve of infection.

In the Western Cape it has been reported that some motorists are not following regulations that were implemented earlier this week.
Western Cape Provincial Traffic Police said that 17 motorists were arrested on Friday morning.
According to the South African the 17 people were questioned by the authorities and eventually detained for contravening the 21 day lockdown rules.
Government has urged people to stay at home, except for essential services staff.
Moreover, citizens have been encouraged to stay at home unless there is an emergency, which includes, getting food supplies or attending to a medical issue.
