Parents and pupils on Monday held a demonstration at the German International School against racism after allegations emerged that a teacher allegedly made discriminatory remarks against children of color during a Life Orientation lesson.
It is alleged that during a Grade 11 Life Orientation class the teacher told pupils that black children do not have role models “because their fathers are in jail and their mothers are prostitutes.”

The school’s principal Alexander Kirmse told News24 that the teacher had been temporarily suspended and disciplinary proceedings initiated against her.
“The disciplinary hearing was chaired by an external labour law expert and statements from the students and teacher were presented. Counselling was made available to the students.
“The school has followed all the recommendations in the report compiled by the independent expert,” Kirmse said.
It is however understood that the teacher was suspended for a week and her absence from school was attributed to sickness.
Pupils from the school will continue to protest as they “don’t feel safe in her class anymore” and weren’t happy about her return.
The school’s student body is demanding that she either resigns or be removed.
