The fire that broke out on the slopes of Table Mountain was ignited by vagrants, the Daily Maverick has reported.
The fire broke out near Rugby Road in Oranjezicht at around 3.40 pm on Saturday afternoon.
Fire Manager for Table Mountain National Park, Philip Prins, told the Daily Maverick that the fire had begun as ‘a vagrant fire.’
“Especially near Platteklip stream going up to Tafelberg Road — there are always vagrants in that area,” Prins said.
Adding that he had received a photograph of where the “vagrants had sat; of where the fire had started” from Rob Erasmus from Enviro Wildlife Services.
He said Erasmus is “a qualified investigator” habitually used by SANParks to probe park fires.
The case was reported to the park’s visitor-safety rangers to do a patrol of the area, in case [the vagrants] return.
The fire was contained around 4:40 am on Sunday morning, and burnt nearly 50 hectares of veld from Deer Park in the east to Higgovale in the west across the mountain’s lower frontal slope.
One firefighter was injured and only one house in Rugby Road was damaged as a result of the fire.
