Stellenbosch final year student killed in suspected hit-and-run

University of Stellenbosch SRC member Nomzamo Buthelezi was killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident on Sunday.

The University said it had obtained information that Buthelezi passed away after suffering injuries caused by an alleged hit-and-run incident in Merriman Avenue, Stellenbosch.

“Ms. Buthelezi, a BSc student from Gauteng, resided in a senior residence on campus,” the university said.

Dr Choice Makhetha, who is the senior director of student affairs, said the circumstances surrounding Buthelezi’s death are part of the investigation of the SA Police Service.

Adding that the university does not wish to comment for now.

The university also urged its students not to speculate about the incident and offered counselling to students who were affected.

Messages of condolences have since been pouring in, with the SRC posting that they lost a member that had “left a footprint in each of their lives”.

SRC chair Xola Njengele, who worked alongside Buthelezi, said her death was a huge loss.

“It has been a privilege to work with such a vibrant and dynamic person. We will miss you, Nomzamo,” he said.
