South Africa now has a total of 18003 confirmed Covid-19 cases, 339 deaths and the total number of recoveries is 8950.
Yesterday the country recorded an additional 27 Covid-19 related fatalities, including the country’s first neonatal mortality related to the coronavirus, after a 2-day old baby succumbed to the virus.
The baby was born prematurely and had lung difficulties requiring aid from a ventilator soon after birth.
According to the National Health department the mother had tested positive for Covid-19 and the child subsequently tested positive for Covid-19 as well.
“It is important to appreciate the complexities of the underlying condition of prematurity,” Minister Mkhize said.
