Social media reacts to white UCT SRC candidate for EFF

Jesse Griesel has decided to run for the Economic Freedom Fighters in the upcoming Student Representative Council (SRC) elections at  University of Cape Town (UCT).

Griesel made her intentions public on social media, saying she is excited and looking forward to serving UCT students under EFF.

The move has left social media users in South Africa divided.

The 19-year-old who is in her second year at the university told the IOL that she has been labelled as a “race traitor” on social media.

“The comments were expected from white people,” she said.

“White people want to talk about the EFF dividing South Africans and causing racial tension yet EFF members have embraced me and I have been labelled a ’race traitor’ by white people.”

“Everyone can do the maths themselves but it looks to me like the only ones continually dividing South Africa are those averse to change and progress.”

Griesel’s announcement has also garnered some high profile support, with Nazier Paulsen, one of the EFF’s MP sending his best wishes to the UCT student.

Griesel has also received support from former DA MP, Phumzile Van Damme, who praised the UCT student for ‘living her freest life’.

“Mandela’s kids living their freest lives. Yes nina bo lovey. I love this for you. I love that it’s going to make racist people mad. You’re doing great sweetie.”- Phumzile Van Damme.
