A senior warden at Pollsmoor Prison was seriously injured when he was attacked and stabbed in what was allegedly a gang-related attack on Saturday.

The man was stabbed in the back and head by a group of 50 inmates.

Simphiwe Xako, spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services Simphiwe said the offenders lured the warden to them by pretending they needed urgent help.

“While he was trying to attend to their request, he was immediately surrounded by more than 50 offenders, who grabbed his legs and arms while the other offenders stabbed him several times on the back and head, Xako said.

The warden was sent to hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

He has since been discharged and is recovering from home.

“Unfortunately, correctional service officials have to work under these harsh conditions.”
