The City of Cape Town will host it’s first lantern parade in Sea Point with handmade lanterns. The lanterns will use LEDs to light up their designs.

The purpose of the event is to promote unity in the Cape community and give creatives a chance to showcase distinctive works of art in lantern form to parade along the streets of Cape Town.

The event will take place on Saturday the 11th of January and allows eco-friendly paper lanterns that strictly use LEDs as an illumination source for safety reasons.

Lanterns that use candles or fire as an illumination source are not allowed as they pose huge danger to the Cape’s natural environments.

The parade begins at Sea Point Pavilion Pool and will go on one way along the Promenade ending at Mouille Point Beach on Beach Road.

Judging begins at 7pm with categories being the Best Individual Lantern, Best Group Lantern and Most Creative Lantern. The winners will lead the parade at 8pm.

Participation is free and spectators can bring along a chair and watch from the sidewalk. Everyone is encouraged to make a lantern.
