SANDF members deployed in Cape Town accused of assault

South African National Defence Force accused of assaulting civilians in Cape Town

The South African National Defence Force were deployed to protect vulnerable people in gang-infested areas on the Cape Flats. It was a bid to stabilize the situation as gang related violence had reached alarming levels in the Cape Flats area.

But there are allegations that the South African National Defence Force is actually perpetrating violence against civilians.

James Bhemgee and Marshelino Rossouw, Winner of SA’s Got Talent 2010, are accusing the army of assaulting them in two separate incidents.

Bhemgee claims he was tortured, when SANDF members came in and told everyone to lift their hands, and whilst their hands were in the air they were smacked and beaten.

Rossouw is claiming he was manhandled after the SANDF mistook him for someone else. He says they beat him and his friend up whilst holding a gun to his head. He also claims they took his license and never returned it.

The SANDF says members who are found guilty will face consequences.

SANDF spokesperson Mafi Mgobozi said they had their own systems by which they held military court and if the accused was found guilty he could be sentenced or be dismissed by the South African Defence Force.

The police say an investigation is currently ongoing.
