South Africa has recorded 8 881 new confirmed Covid-19 case in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number to 1 712 939, with 135 new deaths recorded on Wednesday.
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) the majority of new cases recorded on Wednesday were from the Gauteng province (58%), followed by the Western Cape (9%) province.
“The increase number of tests and cases, and increased positivity are all evidence of the predicted third surge in COVID-19 cases, and not artifacts of data loading or increased laboratory turn-around times,” the NICD said in a statement.
The total number of deaths related to Covid-19 is 57 310. The Western Cape leads with 11 900, followed by the Eastern Cape at 11 688.
