Man accused of defrauding wealthy women online appears in Stellenbosch court

A man who is facing 20 charges of fraud for defrauding wealthy women, appeared briefly in the Stellenbosch magistrates court for a formal bail application today.

Rudi Brits is believed to have targeted wealthy women online before defrauding them.

It is alleged that Brits would befriend wealthy women on social media, start a romantic relationship while borrowing substantial amounts of money before disappearing.

He was arrested by the Flying Squad in the Eastern Cape last year.

Brits is said to have engaged in his crime spree dating back to 2010 until he was apprehended in November 2019.

His bail application was postponed to tomorrow. Brits’ lawyer did not appear in court today.
