A police officer who was about to be arrested allegedly shot and killed himself following a scuffle with colleagues at the Mfuleni police station on Tuesday.
According to the Cape Argus, the deceased officer belonged to the Kuils River visible policing unit (Vispol).
The officer was arrested for alleged theft of ammunition, however an incident report compiled by the unit commander, indicated that he was never handcuffed or held in cells at the time.
The report said that the officer grabbed his service pistol out of his holster and cocked the firearm, while another officer was seated at the counter.
The officer got up and a scuffle between the two ensued, before another officer joined in and tried to disarm the suspect.
A shot went off and the suspect fell to the ground.
The suspect was transported to a hospital were he was later declared deceased.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson, Ndileka Cola, confirmed the incident stating that Ipid was conducting a preliminary investigation.
