Western Cape takes the lead in number of arrests for contravention of the lockdown regulations

Police Minister Bheki Cele has said that provinces with the highest number of arrests for contravention of the lockdown regulations almost mirror the provincial infection rates with the Western Cape in the lead followed by Eastern Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal and Gauteng.

Bheki Cele said this during a briefing on compliance and adherence to the Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

As at 21 May the Western Cape had recorded 12153 Covid-19 cases, the Eastern Cape 2324 cases , Gauteng 2453 cases and Kwa-Zulu Natal 1693 cases.

He said that those who were arrested for non-compliance were either issued with fines or released with a warning.

Cases relating to more serious offences are before the courts, he said.

Cele said over 600 members of the police have tested positive for coronavirus, with the Western Cape recording the highest number of positive cases among SAPS.

To date six members (4 in the Western Cape) have died as a result of Covid-19.
