On brink of a 5th wave as active Covid 19 cases breach 10K in Western Cape

Covid-19: Western Cape nearing peak of third-wave

Authorities are worried that South Africa is on the brink of a 5th wave after Covid 19 cases reached over 10,000 in the Western Cape.

As of Tuesday, the Western Cape province had recorded 10 780 active Covid 19 cases.

Despite the increase in cases in the province, Covid-19-related hospitalisations and deaths remain low.

Provincial Health and Wellness Department spokesperson Mark van der Heever said the department is still looking at the data to determine the potential severity of the now anticipated 5th wave.

Active Covid 19 cases nationwide rose to  58 576 as of 7 May with the national positivity rate at 31.1%.

Some experts like University of Cape Town’s Dr Marvin Hsiao believe these figure indicate that South Africa is already in the 5th wave.
