Off-duty police officer shot and killed in Mfuleni

Constable Phindile Vutula, 33, was shot dead, along with another man, while sitting in his car.
No details have been released about the deceased police captain yet, as SAPS management has yet to consult his family.

An off-duty police officer, Phindile Vutula, 33, was shot and killed in a double murder in Mfuleni on Tuesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said two adult men were shot and killed on Tuesday around 4pm in Mfuleni.

“The victims’ bodies were discovered in a silver Ford Focus. One of the victims is a 33-year-old police officer stationed at Philippi East and was off duty at the time of the incident,” he said.

A third man who was a passenger escaped with a wound in his hand while the person who was sitting on the driver’s seat escaped unharmed.

Phindile’s uncle Mandlakhe Vutula said he received a call about the shooting incident.

He was able to identify his body at Tygerberg Hospital mortuary.

Vutula was stationed in the Philippi East for about four years.
