Off duty Mfuleni sergeant, wife and two children perish after fire breaks out in their home

An off-duty police sergeant, his wife and their two young children have died after a fire engulfed their home in Wesbank near Mfuleni on Friday night.

The police official was attached to Mfuleni SAPS.

According to police a tenant on the premises heard screams on Friday night and attempted to gain access to the house.

“A 48 year old police sergeant, his 38 year old wife and two children 4 and 8 died of smoke inhalation after a fire broke out at their home on Friday evening.

“Meanwhile the deceased couple’s 18-year-old daughter is in hospital after sustaining burn wounds and her 11 month old daughter is being treated for smoke inhalation,” police spokesperson, Novela Potelwa said.

Police are probing the cause of the fire.
