Ocean Basket managers embroiled in racism spat over marrying across racial lines

Viljoen denies the allegations and says “there were never any racial problems between us," and we only 'made jokes' with Van der Westhuizen.

A former Ocean Basket manager at V&A waterfront has taken the restaurant chain to the CCMA over racism allegations.

Richard van der Westhuizen, 54, claims General manager Johan Viljoen, had called him a “meit n**ier” after he found out he was married to a coloured Muslim woman.

Speaking to the Daily Voice, van der Westhuizen says Viljoen was not impressed with him marrying across racial lines to the point of calling his children bastards.

Van der Westhuizen says he revealed to Viljoen that he was previously married to a coloured Muslim women whom he has four children with at which point Viljoen responded with racial undertones.

He allegedly said, “Sis! You should be ashamed, you’re a f *** white man who married a f *** girl, now you have four bastards walking around”.

Van der Westhuizen says he was eventually let go at Ocean Basket after he complained to upper management over the racial harassment by Viljoen. He has now made an official complaint with the CCMA and proceedings are still pending.

Viljoen denies the allegations and says “there were never any racial problems between us,” and we only ‘made jokes’ with Van der Westhuizen.

However, as part of his receipts to prove Viljoen is a racist, van der Westhuizen presented a video in which Viljoen allegedly referred to van der Westhuizen with the racial slur, “n**iertjie”.

Ocean Basket says it is currently waiting for the CCMA hearing to commence.
