Man suspected of starting Western Cape fire to remain behind bars

The 34 year old  man who is suspected to have started the  fire in Betty’s Bay which tore through the Overstrand area is expected to spend the next week in jail pending bail.

The case has been postponed for next week Monday by the Caledon Magistrate’s court  as the court awaits submissions of bail information. Moreover the Kleinmond Police said they needed to asses the extent of the damage caused by the fire in monetary terms, which will be useful to the court in assessing the bail application.

The fire is said to have started after the suspect shot a signal flare into the air whilst celebrating on New Year’s Eve. The spark ignited vegetation and subsequently spread to surrounding areas .

The man is facing charges of  contravening the Nature conservation ordinance (NCO).
