Man arrested after 'swimming from Great Brak River to the Petro SA’s Orca platform'

A man who apparently swam in the ocean from Great Brak River to Petro SA’s Orca platform in Mossel Bay waters is expected to appear in the Mossel Bay magistrate’s court on Thursday.

The 38-year-old man was found clinging to the base of the platform at around 4.30 am on Tuesday.

Mossel Bay police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Pieter Koekemoer said police are still investigating how the man got to the Orca.

“There were rough sea conditions last night and no boats were out on the water, so we believe he might have swum there.”

The man was treated for hypothermia at the Orca and subsequenlty flown back to shore by a police helicopter.

The man will be charged under the National Key Points Act.

It contravenes state security rules to enter oil rigs or operational areas of harbours or airports among others, without authorisation.
