The male cub found at a house in Athlone on 22 August, was apparently trafficked from Limpopo for a party of a two-year-old girl.
According to a Daily Voice report, a source says the lion was trafficked to Athlone for a girl who had recently seen The Lion King movie and fell in love with little Simba and Nala, the two main characters.
“The theme of the party was going to be The Lion King and her father wanted two cubs as a party trick, to impress people and to make his daughter happy,” says the source.
The trio accused of trafficking and keeping an endangered lion cub in Athlone Cape Town appeared in court for the first time a yesterday.
Sulaiman, Shurud Jacobs and Moegamat Rayaan Simons made their first court appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court.
Moments before taking the stand, Sulaiman Jacobs burst into tears when he saw his friends and relatives who came to support him.
The trio are facing 14 charges relating to the protection of wild animals.
The State asked for R10 000 bail for Jacobs and R5000 for the other two accused.
