Western Cape police say detectives in Kuils River have charged a man with the murder of his 12 year old son a month after they were reported missing.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa, a 59 year old Namibian national is in custody and a body was unearthed in Kuils River on Saturday afternoon.
“The suspect was reported missing with his son in Kuils River on November 30. As part of the police investigation into their disappearance, pictures and details were subsequently circulated in a bid to locate their whereabouts.”
Police in Van Rhynsdorp, which is a small town on the West Coast, recognised the father from photographs of the pair that had been in circulation. The suspect was then held and transported to Cape Town.
On Saturday afternoon, the father confessed to killing his son and showed police where the body was buried.
The decomposed body was retrieved by detectives and crime scene experts near a canal in Soneike, Kuils River.
DNA tests will be conducted to determine whether the remains are indeed that of the missing boy.
Potelwa said the suspect is expected in court soon.
