Holy Cross primary receives support after devastating fire

Three classrooms, a newly renovated library and the school's kitchen were destroyed by the fire.

Holy Cross Primary School in Zonnebloem near the Cape Town CBD has been receiving overwhelming support following a fire that ravaged the school on Thursday.

Three classrooms, a newly renovated library and the school’s kitchen were destroyed by the fire.

Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said businesses and Cape Town residents stepped up to assist following the incident.

She said a huge concern was replacing lost backpacks and stationery for pupils and Shoprite met this need and donated those supplies.

The community of Cape Town also came together and provided stationery and food as the school’s feeding scheme kitchen was destroyed, and other items.

Hammond said the school also lost its computer room and library, therefore donations of books and educational toys are still welcome.
