Health Minister, Dr. Zweli Mkhize says the government’s decision to implement the lockdown on an alert level system as well as to re-open the economy slowly is starting to bear fruit.
“After 5 weeks of hard lockdown, hunger, lack of food, and income security resulted in social and economic distress and it became necessary to focus on both lives and livelihoods. Thus began the differentiated approach of easing restrictions through our alert level system.”
While speaking during a virtual Covid-19 conference Mkhize said the Western Cape province has passed the peak, while the Eastern Cape and Gauteng have shown signs of a promising decline.
He said the country’s recovery rate which now stands at 64% is also encouraging.
Adding that the recovery rate indicates that more people have overcome the infection than those who are infected and test positive.
