Grade 12 pupil killed during house robbery in Cape Town

A Grade 12 pupil was shot dead in his Khayelitsha home in Cape Town during an alleged house robbery.

Mihlali Funde, 18, a matric pupil at Rhodes High School in Mowbray, was shot and succumbed to his injuries at the scene in Mawisa Street.

A second victim, Odwa Tom, 21, died while being transported to hospital by his parents.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said officers from Lingelethu West police responded to the scene on Thursday at 20:00, where they found the body of the teenager with gunshot wounds to his body.

“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.”

“A 21-year-old male, who sustained injuries, was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, where he was declared deceased upon arrival,” said Swartbooi.

The three armed suspects fled the scene with TVs and cellphones.

According to the Cape Argus community members from other sections in Site B, Khayelitsha, have reported that criminals were terrorising them, with some breaking into their homes asking for plasma TVs and stealing their cellphones, saying they were doing their jobs.

ANC community safety provincial spokesperson Mesuli Kama said similar incidents had been reported in Gugulethu and areas of Philippi.
