Graça Machel’s tenure as the University of Cape Town (UCT) Chancellor will be coming to an end on the 31st of December and the UCT took last week’s graduation ceremony as an opportunity to bid farewell to the outgoing Chancellor.

Machel has presided over the post for the past 20 years after being first elected on September 18 1999.

She was re-elected for a second term, uncontested in 2010.

The outgoing Chancellor presided over her last graduation ceremony, which had a total of 1771 students scheduled to graduate at the Sarah Baartman Hall.

Business woman, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, will take over the reins as the university’s next chancellor on the 1st of  January.
