Gauteng is expected to reach Western Cape infection numbers in the next 10 days.
According to Wits University health economist professor Alex van den Heever, Gauteng will reach the Western Cape’s average daily death figures of 50 a day within the said period.
In the past week, Gauteng’s infections have almost doubled, from 17,261 to 31,344 by Friday.
Heever said Gauteng might have a smaller number of cases overall, but at 1,500 daily infections its new cases are now exceeding the 1,400 per day in the Western Cape.
Provincial health spokesperson Kwara Kwena said the province prepared five isolation and quarantine sites, but no field hospitals have been constructed.
The bed shortage in the province is expected to reach 5,000 in the next 2 weeks.
Wits University vaccinologist professor Shabir Madhi said Gauteng will potentially overtake the Western Cape in terms of death and infections within three weeks.
