Evacuation as Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay fires claim one life

Firefighters in the Western Cape were battling veld fires between Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay on Thursday morning. Residents have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. The province’s traffic chief Kenny Africa told eNCA the R44 between Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay was closed for now.

One person has reportedly died from the fire which was allegedly started by a New Year’s eve flare. News 24 reported earlier that the The Overstrand municipality is offering a R5000 reward for anyone with information on who lit a flare in Betty’s Bay leading to a fire in the mountains.

The Greater Overberg Fire Protection Association (goFPA) said in a statement:

With huge regret we have to report the loss of a life during the early hours of this morning. Our sincere condolences to the family. Cause of the fatality is currently unknown, SAPS and forensic services investigating. We request the public to keep the communities of Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay, Hangklip and surrounding rural area in their thoughts, it was a traumatic night full of uncertainty

The Fire protection services says 3 people sustained serious injuries whilst 1 person escaped with minor injuries.
