A storeroom and documentation has been damaged when a fire broke out at the Public Protector’s office in Wale Street in Cape Town.

Fire department spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said fire-fighters responded to the fourth floor of the building on Thursday. It is a serviced office space initiative offering a concierge and CCTV.

He said the building has since been evacuated and the fire extinguished.

“While the building was evacuated crews from Roland Street Fire Station have managed to contain the blaze to a single room. One person was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation and a fire investigator has been requested to ascertain the cause of the fire,”Carelse said.

Public Protector spokesperson Oupa Segalwe told News24 that no investigation documents were lost in the fire.

“Staff are safe and investigation files have not been lost,” he said.
