Cape Town has the highest murder rate in South Africa according to the 2018/2019 State of Urban Safety report.
According to the report, Cape Town recorded around 2500 murders between 2016-2017 which translates to 69 murders per 100,000 people.
Gang violence has been cited as the key driver to this rapid murder rate together with the increasing supply of illegal firearms street gangs. Police investigations and court proceedings have implicated corrupt police officials as one source of the illegal firearms.
The reports states,
Cape Town performs well compared to the other cities in terms of poverty, income inequality and youth unemployment, but has the highest rates of murder, robbery and property-related crimes
The reports also says that Capetonians are the least satisfied with law enforcement only after Buffalo City.
