Cape Town mom, Leigh Ann Goldie is appealing to the public for assistance in raising money to save her son Brendan’s life.
Leigh Ann says she and her family got the shock of their lives two weeks ago when they found out that Brendan had a leaking heart valve.
29-year-old Brendan became aware of his life-threatening condition following a health check up at the doctor in preparation for a planned trip to Angola.
The doctor picked up a heart murmur, and subsequently referred Brendan to see a specialist at Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital.
The tests confirmed that Brendan could die if he doesn’t get the open-heart surgery soon.
Leigh-Ann revealed that the current backlog for surgical operations at public hospitals is six months and Brendan does not have that much time.
“His heart could fail at any given time,” said Leigh-Ann.
In the absence of medical cover Brendan’s family will need to raise R550,000 to have the surgery performed as soon as possible.
A crowd-funding page has been set up where people can donate money towards the operation.
The crowd-funding page shows that R87 600 has been donated to this cause so far.
The family will also host a fund-raising event on Saturday at the Blowfish Restaurant in Table View for R250 per person.
