Cape Town family struggling to cope with two funerals after train accident

She was in hospital and I don’t know… maybe the incident took her by surprise.

A Cape Town family that lost their son after he was struck by a train is facing the double heartache of conducting two funerals on Saturday, after the deceased boy’s grandmother also passed away days after the accident.

16-year-old Simo Kwepe from Gugulethu, died after being hit by a train in Cape Town last week. Simo was a grade 10 pupil at Zonnebloem Secondary School is said to jumped out of the train because it had been standing still between Woodstock and Salt River for “a long time” and he didn’t want to be late for school.

Now, Simo’s father Michael Kwepe said it was not only his son who was being buried on Saturday but the boy’s grandmother as well. He said she died a few days after her grandson’s death.

She was in hospital and I don’t know… maybe the incident took her by surprise.

Kwepe said Metro rail has been in touch with the family and has promised financial assistance, but the family hasn’t received any help yet with both funerals taking place this Saturday.
