Cape Town came out tops after a feature on Numbeo’s 2019 global Quality of Life Index, identified it as the city that provides the best quality of life in the whole of Africa.
Numbeo enables people to see, share and compare information about quality of life.
Assessments on the quality of life in the cities take into consideration, cost of living and purchasing power, affordability of housing, pollution including air, water, Crime rates, health system quality, and traffic (commute times).
Cape Town took the 122nd spot out of 233 cities, eventually coming out on top in Africa with a 149.59 quality of life index.
Durban trails behind Cape Town with 144.36 (and comes in with the lowest traffic commute time).
Pretoria follows with 131.29 while Johannesburg came in at 129.02.
The index identified Joburg as the city offering the cheapest cost of living in South Africa.
According to the index, the level of crime in Johannesburg is ranked very high.
Overall, Cape Town’s crime index is 70.29 while Joburg’s index is 80.25, which is higher and more concerning in this case.
Only Lagos, Nigeria, Nairobi, Kenya, Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town made it onto the list in Africa.
