The man who’s suspected to have started a secondary fire on Table Mountain on Sunday evening appeared in court on Tuesday.

Frederick Mhangazo from Tanzania appeared at Cape Town Regional Court on arson charges.

Mhangazo’s pro bono lawyer, Shaun Balram, said his client had no previous convictions or pending matters, and maintains that he was being wrongly accused.

The accused was arrested on Sunday night, hours after the initial blaze.

Meanwhile, police are continuing with investigations to ascertain the causes of the multiple fires along Table Mountain.

City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said City law enformcent officers are currently gathering CCTV footage to see if any additional information is revealed.

He said Devil’s Peak and Vredehoek residents have also been asked to to come forward with any evidence .
