Cape police in two separate abalone busts in one day

A 38 year old male was on Friday arrested whilst walking along the shore at Melkbosstrand along the Cape West Coast carrying a bag containing R46 000 worth of illegal abalone

Illegal abalone poaching seem to be on the rise in Cape Town. This follows two separate incidents in which Cape Town police have broken down illegal abalone operations.

In the first incident, a 38 year old male was on Friday arrested whilst walking along the shore at Melkbosstrand along the Cape West Coast carrying a bag containing R46 000 worth of illegal abalone.

After being taken to the police station, the bag was found to contain 22 abalone in shells, and 132 without shells.

In a separate incident on Friday, police raided a warehouse in Gray Street in Paarden Island and discovered an illegal abalone factory. No arrests were made in the second incident.
