Cape matric pupil handed a three-year sentence for killing 7-year-old with quad bike

For three years he denied that he was responsible for the little boy’s death.

A matric pupil convicted of culpable homicide was handed a three-year sentence, the 18-year-old Robinvale High School pupil will be placed under house arrest and subjected to correctional supervision.

The matric pupil is said to have struck and killed 7-year-old Jessi Steven on July 30, 2016 with a quad bike, the pupil subsequently drove away from the accident scene.

For three years he denied that he was responsible for the little boy’s death.

The sentence handed down in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday comes after the grade 12 pupil pleaded guilty two weeks ago.

The court ordered that the learner not drive a quad bike during the three-year period,  warning that if he was convicted of a similar crime, he would be jailed for 10 years.

Reading out his plea explanation in court, he apologised to Jessi’s family and told them they would always be in his prayers.

Jessi’s father, Grant, said: “I’m just happy this journey is over.
