Breaking: Army to stay in Cape Town until March 2020

President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) deployment to the Cape Flats until March 2020.

Presidential spokesperson Khusela Diko said Cyril Ramaphosa has extended the army’s stay in crime-affected parts of Cape Cape until 31 March 2020 starting today.

The President has, in compliance with the Constitution, informed the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thandi Modise, and Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Amos Masondo, of the extended deployment of armed forces,” Diko said.

The initial deployment of the SANDF to Cape Town was due to end today and there was great uncertainty as to whether there would be an extension.

Last week, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde made a request to extend the deployment with several conditions aimed at improving the efficiency of the SANDF in the fight against violent crime.
