Bellville’s Oude Westhof retirement facility in Cape Town has experienced Covid-19 outbreaks among its employees and residents.
According to News 24, the retirement facility reported one death while more than 40 residents and staff have contracted Covid-19.
On Monday village manager Gerhard van der Merwe said that the virus had managed to enter the complex despite strict safety measures introduced before the lockdown.
“We started a long time ago with isolating and locking down,” said Van der Merwe. “And still it crept in.”
A matron from the frail care section of the home said that 22 residents and 25 staff members had contracted the virus in the frail care section.
The facility is also trying to cope with staff shortages, with some staff in quarantine or isolation.
Matron Ina Prevedello said the facility has had to employ new nursing staff.
“We’re coping,” in between training the new staff. “It’s a bit hectic,” she said.
