Another car plunges off Voëlklip beach lookout point, 1 dead

Another car has reportedly plunged off Voëlklip beach lookout point in  Herold’s Bay.

Police recovered the body of an unidentified man from the rocks below just after noon on Wednesday.

According to eyewitnesses the Ford Eco Sport, with a CA registration, was seen plunging down the lookout point around 8.30am today.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Chris Spies says no foul play is suspected.

George police spokesperson Captain Nolonwabo Tshengu said the vehicle is believed to have been hired and driven by a white male, whose identity is still unknown.

Eight people died in the area from November 3, 2015 to April 29, 2016.

In October 2019 Heidi Scheepers, 35 and her two children, Cuzette, 6 and Hugo, 2 lost their lives after their VW Caravelle plunged off the same cliff.

Most recently in  December 2019, 52-year-old Zonita Basson,  died after her Chevrolet Spark drove off the cliff.

Following a George city council meeting last year in December it was proposed that a fence be erected at the lookout point at Voelklip beach as the 100m plunge continues to claim lives.
